Cart the material was on does not meet occupational health and safety regulations, says WorkSafeBC

One worker was seriously injured when 1,400 pounds of sheet metal fell on them at a worksite in British Columbia.

The incident happened on Oct. 25 in Mission, B.C. On That day, a cart loaded with sheet metal fell on the worker, reported City News, citing a WorkSafeBC inspection report.

“A shop-built cart loaded with approximately 1,400 lbs of sheet metal fell onto a worker when they were trying to move it,” the inspection report said.

The worker was transported to a hospital via air ambulance.

The worker was working for Horizon Metal Systems Inc., according to City News.

The cart used by the worker was built using a furniture dolly, a metal frame, and plywood. It does not meet occupational health and safety regulations. A WorkSafeBC officer issued a stop work order on the cart.

The officer found that the employer had not developed proper procedures for moving sheet metal projects on mobile carts, and the worker who was injured was not trained in the task.

Also, the employer had not developed up-to-date written procedures for providing first aid at the work site or documenting young or new worker orientations.
